    Given this development, it is a shame (if this is still the case) that all full-time students are obliged to join their local NUS in order to join particular societies. The point would be well made if NUS membership declined precipitously as a result of this. After all, the NUS, nationally and locally, hardly acts as a trade union in the usual sense of the term.
