Facebook Promote The Oldest Anti-Jewish Libel: Eric Lee

This is a cross-post by Eric Lee

I learned this morning that Facebook has a page devoted to “Jewish ritual murder” which I found hard to believe — so I checked and found it’s true.

So, as one does, I used Facebook’s complaint procedure to formally report harassment.  After all, I do feel harassed — as a Jew and a human being — by people promoting vile anti-Jewish propaganda.

It took Facebook 32 minutes to respond, which is great.

Good to see that they care about racism and antisemitism and are as keen as I am to … wait a minute … here’s a screenshot of their response:

Just in case you can’t read that, here’s the essence of it:

You reported Jewish ritual murder for harassment.

Thank you for taking the time to report something that you feel may violate our Community Standards. Reports like yours are an important part of making Facebook a safe and welcoming environment. We reviewed the page you reported for harassment and found it doesn’t violate our Community Standards.

When I went to look at the Facebook “Community Standards” here’s what I found under “Hate Speech”:

Facebook does not permit hate speech, but distinguishes between serious and humorous speech. While we encourage you to challenge ideas, institutions, events, and practices, we do not permit individuals or groups to attack others based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sex, gender, sexual orientation, disability or medical condition.”

So, Facebook, how is a page promoting the oldest anti-Semitic slur, the infamous“blood libel”, not hate speech?

Have you contacted the CST? A few years ago after ordering Jewish Studies books from Amazon I got ‘recommendations’ for antisemitic literature. Amazon said they couldn’t do anything because these were automatically generated. So I contacted the CST who said they’d take it up with Amazon and they stopped. Maybe this needs to be reported as Hate Speech rather than harassment.

I think what is notable in these circumstances is not necessarily the inflammatory racism (although there is a case to argue on that as well), but how individuals and organisations react to it.

Do they spot it? Can they comprehend it as antisemitism? Or does it fly over their head?

Another example is the Stop the War Coalition’s reprinting of the American antisemite, Alison Weir and how few of its supporters objected.

I just reported it, but not under the harassment clause but Hate speech towards a religious group. They are not harassing me, never knew this one existed till today…could be that is why?

  4. Jessica Goldfinch Says:

I reported it under ‘hate speech’ and got an instant reply, the same as yours – no removal, no violation.

I’ve added this to their feedback option: Your decision violates your own Community Standards – The accusation of Jewish Ritual Murder is part of the blood libel. It has been used to whip up hysteria, hatred, persecution and murder of Jews across centuries.
No Jewish ritual murder has ever been proven and all so-called documented cases have been disproven.
By allowing this page to continue you are not promoting open-free-speech-opinions-discussion you are giving fodder for neo-Nazis and their sympathisers, based on hate lies:

these stupid antisemites, have no more stock to spew. so they rehash old comments and outdated views. their time is limited. you can fool some of the people, some of the time. you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.

Perhaps this is best reported to the ADL rather than the CST. This is an American organization and better equipped to deal with an American web page of this nature. http://www.adl.org/combating-hate/

Ive contacted 4 times EXPO and SKMA – Swedish “aniracist organisations” telling them that Menachem Beilis (100 yrs old) trial has been recycled and DISTORTED by Jewhaters, while “antiracist” totally ignored that issue .There are even lots of hate-vids on youtube named ‘Jewish ritual murder).,No one of our “antiracist” was interested in that issue,,Instead one of EXPO-members Jonathan Leman blocked my twitter account..
Now is 100 years since Menachem Beilis, Russian Jew, been accused of ritual murder..Although the judge was biased and explicitly instructed the jury to return a guilty verdict, Beilis was found not guilty. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Menahem_Mendel_Beilis..??
Myself boycott facebook, but ive reported long ago to many organisation about that page “Jewish ritual murder” – my report was totally ignored

I reported NOT ONLY the page but the photo of a DEAD CHILD? THAT DOESN’T VIOLATE COMMUNITY STANDARDS FACEBOOK? REALLY?

  10. Jonathan Lowenstein Says:

The response was probably generated by a machine rather than a human being. You need to persist.

Facebook removed a photo of a woman breast feeding on the grounds it contradicted its “policy on nudity and pornography”. http://www.naturalnews.com/043850_Facebook_breastfeeding_live_birth_photos.htmlutm_medium=twitter&utm_source=twitterfeed##ixzz2taygOmqx
So breastfeeding no, but dead children and blood libels are OK. It may be an issue of critical mass of complaints – so as many people as possible need to keep complaining.

  12. Lev Bronstein Says:

Here is an interesting Israeli documentary that discusses this very issue and more.

Shame no English subtitles but quite a bit is in English including an interview with Howard Jacobson. Face Book’s creator Mark Zuckerberg is mentioned and criticised (29.40) for not doing more to put an end to anti-Semitic content on his site when he could do easily.
