The Warped Mirror: The ‘Israeli Apartheid’ gospel

Petra Marquardt-Bigman reviews Ben White’s new book “Israeli Apartheid: A Beginner’s Guide”.

Advertised as “The new book by Ben White” on a website dedicated to marketing “Israeli Apartheid: A Beginner’s Guide,” everything seems skillfully designed to appeal both to dedicated Israel-bashers and newcomers eager to learn the basics. Those who have never heard of Ben White, a young Cambridge graduate with a BA in English Literature, will certainly be impressed by the long list of prominent people he could get to endorse his first book that has nothing whatsoever to do with anything he studied: Ben White’s efforts to spread the idea that Israel should be denounced and opposed as an “apartheid state” are warmly praised by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the historian Ilan Pappe, and a number of well-known academics and writers as well as political and religious personalities.

Reviews that are critical of Ben White’s book are, understandably, not featured on this website. One of the most recent reviews that includes links to some noteworthy previous responses to Ben White is available at Z Word. Among the issues that have been repeatedly raised by critics of White’s work are questions about his expertise and his apparent unwillingness to acknowledge that the sources he relies on are anything but uncontroversial and have been shown to contain numerous distortions and misrepresentations.

Here is the introductory chapter to Ben White’s book:

zkharya — I just saw your comment on the JPost site now — have been traveling with only sporadic chances to connect. If I understood your comment correctly, you plan to review Ben White’s book. I checked out the chapter you linked to, and frankly, what can you say about a book that starts with “oh, there SEEM to be sooooo many different explanations, but don’t worry if you are confused, for I will give you the TRUTH….”. That’s one reason why I thought of “gospel”…
As you may have seen, the last link I give in my blogpost is to a piece that deals with the false apartheid analogy — sorry, I have a slow connection right now and can’t go back to copy the link for you now; but all in all, I would have little to add either to that or to what I wrote in my blog. Ben White starts out from his “Truth” that Israel has no right to exist as a Jewish state, and simply makes everything fit accordingly; and of course, he is a one-stater and against any negotiations about the 2state solution. When you look at his argument (if this term is at all applicable here, because it’s really more an article of faith), for him, Zionism is apartheid, by definition; and while he may write a lot about specific Israeli policies to keep up appearances (“I’m just criticizing Israeli policies….”), it’s clear that none of this really matters for him, because as long as there is a Jewish state in historic Palestine, he will claim there is apartheid…

Yes, Petra, I just ordered it for £8 inc. p&p which isn’t bad, considering, but could have been spent on a book I really do want and need. Never mind.
